The Skyline girls track and field team claimed its fifth consecutive Sea-King crown last Friday, edging rival Issaquah 114-103.
“The girls were really excited about taking the district title for the fifth consecutive year,” coach Dawn Geiser said. “We knew it was going to be a close meet with Issaquah and it was.”
The Spartans were led by sophomore Shealee O’Donnell’s victories in the 100 (12.07 seconds) and 200 (25.10). She edged Issaquah’s Johanna Carr, who had a 12.07 and 25.17, respectively.
“Shea really stepped it up at district,” Geiser said. “She’s always a tough competitor, but what I saw her do on Friday was beyond my expectations. The energy she created with her performance carried over to everyone else on the team.”
McKensie Gelber also grabbed a first-place finish in the javelin, with a toss of 123 feet, 5 inches, while Kiara Williams was first in the 100 hurdles (15.27). The 400 and 800 relay teams were also victorious, winning in times of 48.76 and 1:44.66, respectively. The teams consist of Williams, O’Donnell, Danielle Matthews and Kaylyn Berry. Other top four finishers moving on to today’s state meet were Amber Dodd, 300 hurdles (47.04); Britlyn Garrett, javelin (119-11); Barbara Holladay, high jump (5-0) and Kayli Kohlrus, triple jump (36-2 1/2).
The Skyline boys finished fifth Friday with 61 points. West Seattle (72), Mount Si (67), Seattle Prep (63) and Rainier Beach (62) finished in the top four. The Spartans had two league champions and are sending five individuals and one relay team to state. Andrew Gray took the league championship in the 110 hurdles (15.06), while Simon Sorrenson won the 3,200 (9:29.15). Sorrenson will also compete in the 1,600 at the state meet. Other top four finishers moving on are Kasen Williams, high jump (6-4) and triple jump (43-0 3/4); AJ Francis, javelin (168-9) and Jordan Kaatz, 400 (51.37). The 400 relay team of Gray, Kaatz, Blake Springer and Dustin Bratten also advanced to state.
Issaquah girls send solid core to state
The Issaquah girls track and field team came up just shy of a district title, but the Eagles are sending a solid core of athletes to the state meet. Bonnie Young and Emee Mathew lead the group of six individuals and one relay going to state. Young took the league title in the 800 (2:17.45) and Mathew won the shot put (38-9 1/2). The 1,600 relay of Young, Emma Ogilvie, Haida Ikeda and Kaley Allison also took first in 4:02.75. Other individuals moving on are Johanna Carr, 100 (12.07) and 200 (25,17); Elaine Tran, 100 hurdles (15.51) and 300 hurdles (45.73); Samantha King, high jump (5-0) and Haley Jacobson, 100 (12.21).
The Issaquah boys finished 17th in the district meet with 11 points. Ryan Tiernan will be the lone representative for the Eagles, competing in the 300 hurdles.
Eastlake advances five athletes to state
The Eastlake girls track and field team finished sixth at Saturday’s District 2/4 meet with 49 points. Inglemoor won the meet with 104 points. The Wolves are sending three athletes to the state meet, including Chelsea Orr, 800 (2:18.56) and 1,600 (5:13.45); Natalie Lambert, long jump (15-9 1/2) and triple jump (35-8 3/4); and Lan VoBa, triple jump (35-3 1/2).
The Eastlake boys finished in eighth place at the 17-team meet with 38 points. Inglemoor won the meet with 88 points.
The boys are sending two individuals, along with both relays to the state meet. Dan Sloat advanced in the 800 (1:58.45) and Michael Blodnick advanced in the 1,600 (4:28.44). The 1,600 relay of Patrick Gallagher, Paul Kupcis, Brandon Cole, Dan Sloat won the district title in a time of 3.25.56 and the 400 relay of Robert Moore, Stephen Wallinger, Dune Butler and Daniel Jackstadt was third in 43.41 seconds.
The class 3A/4A state meets take place today and tomorrow at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.
